Episode 38 – Matt Axton (Hoyt Axton – Son)

Matt Axton is not only a joy to chat with, he’s also the son of one of the smoothest voices in folk / rock / country music Mr. Hoyt Axton. He is also the grandson of the songwriter behind Elvis Presley’s first #1 hit “Heart Break Hotel”, “Queen Mother of Nashville”, Ms. Mae Boren Axton. I’ve always been a fan of his father’s music and acting, even when I didn’t realize it because of
the songs Hoyt wrote for other artist. Think “Joy to the World – Three Dog Night and “The N No Song – Ringo Starr”. So when I saw Matt Axton come across my social media feeds I had to reach out. Matt responded quickly, with “heck yeah let’s do this”.

Matt is a fulltime traveling musician with a voice as smooth and rich as his father. Like his dad he also has a wide variety of styles he performs while on the road. He is also a prolific songwriter and host the Tahoe Joy Festival in Tahoe, CA every year. During of conversation Matt coved so much about his musical journey, his family legacy and standing on his as a musician / songwriter while also honoring his father Hoyt and Hoyt’s fans that love his songs. Matt Axton a true gentleman if there ever is one!

Episode 36 – Leland Chapman (Dog the Bounty Hunter – Son)

Leland Chapman was introduced to Relatively Famous through Kimber Eastwood Midkiff (SO1 Ep21 of Relatively Famous) daughter of Clint Eastwood. Guess you could say there’s Bounty Hunter theme there, Clint “A Few Dollars More” – “Joe Kidd” and Leland “Dog the Bounty Hunter”. OK, so that was only funny to me… Leland is the son of legendary bounty hunter and reality tv star Duane Chapman aka Dog the Bounty Hunter.

Leland began working with his dad in the bounty hunting business at the very young age of 7 or 8. Leland would knock on the door pretending he was the paperboy, kind of like bait for the wanted person to open the door. As a teenager Leland was on the path that leads to time behind bars or six feet under when his family moved to Hawaii and his life changed forever. The beauty and peace of Hawaii gave Leland time to reflect on his choices, and set him on a career path he loves with a passion.

Staring on “Dog The Bounty Hunter” with his father sent his life into a whole new direction. Fame and recognition which as a bounty hunter is not always what you need. Leland talks about how tv fame has changed his bounty hunting style and how it has also helped. Today Leland runs his own Bail Bonding company and bounty hunts out of Alabama. His goal is to have his own show produced by Kimber Eastwood, help others change their life path and leave the world a better place.

Episode 35 – Craig Colquitt (Britton and Dustin Colquitt – Father)

I was introduced to Craig Colquitt through Phil Carson, whom I met at Podcast Multimedia Expo (a must for podcasters). Craig is the father of Britton and Dustin Colquitt and part of the University of Tennessee Football punting dynasty. My friend and UT alumni Mikie Gause was thrilled when I told her Craig was going to be a guest. Her quote “you can always count on a Colquitt”.

The Colquitt’s are a punting phenomenon, Craig, Dustin and Britton all punted for U of Tenn and all three are NFL Superbowl winners as punters. Craig won two Superbowl rings with the Pittsburgh Steelers (1979 & 80) while Dustin won with the Kansas City Chefs (2020) and Britton won his ring with the Denver Broncos (2016).

Craig is an amazing father, artist and has some amazing football and life stories he shares on this episode. From playing with Terry Bradshaw to watching his sons develop from soccer players into NFL punters. I can say I truly learned a lot about punting and thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with Craig. I think you will also. Oh and it seems the Colquitt punting dynasty may continue as Dustin’s son are already making a new mark on the football field.

Episode 30 – Marvin King (Marcus King – Father)

In this episode I talk with a fellow South Carolinian, Marvin King, the father of Grammy nominated guitarist and singer, Marcus King. Marvin resides in the beautiful city of Greenville, SC and is also a musician, as was his father. Marvin is proud to see his son Marcus carry on a family tradition. Even playing his grandfather’s rare “Big Red” Gibson guitar.

Marcus has really exploded on the rock, country and blues scene over the last couple of years. He nominated for a Grammy and tours the world doing both acoustic and electric shows and has played with a who’s who in the rock, blues and country music scene.

Marcus gave his father Marvin a chance to meet his guitar hero Eric Clapton, has sat in on recordings with his dad and is loving and humble brother to Holland and son to Marvin.
This is a fantastic music loving episode, a chance to hear a father’s advice to his son, feel the joy of a father standing in his son’s shadow and even a little of the deadly side of living the Rock & Roll lifestyle.

Episode 26 – Charlie McCord (Billy Vera – Son)

Thanks to social media I was able to reconnect with Charlie McCord’s father. I first meet Charlie’s father in the Green Room of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Vanna was a guest and his dad was promoting his hit song “At This Moment”. Charlie is the son of Billy Vera, one the most amazing singers I know, with a career that expands over 60 yrs. Like his father Charlie is a singer and musician, had a band with his brother and also produces for video productions. I really enjoyed learning about Charlie’s music career and what it’s like being the son of a Hollywood musical legend.

Episode 25 – Nick Clemons (Clarence “The Big Man” Clemons – Son)

One of my prized possessions is a signed concert program from Ringo Starr’s All Star Band 1989 tour. What I love about this program is that Clarence “The Big Man” Clemons signed it, I’ve be a fan of The Big Man for years. So when I saw his son Nick Clemons posting on Facebook I had to reach out and ask him to be a guest. Nick is also a musician with his own band and style of music. He recalls the first time he played with his dad, meeting Clarence’s bandmates, discovering how world respected his dad is and striving to keep his father’s legacy in the public eye with The Big Man’s Brew and possibly reopening his father’s nightclub.

Episode 23 – Nikko Santo Pietro (Vanna White – Son)

On this episode of Relatively Famous I take the word relative literally. In early December 2024 my nephew, Vanna’s son Nikko Santo Pietro became an internet sensation when a Wheel of Fortune food video went viral. Suddenly “Vanna’s HOT son” was the talk of the town. During Nikko’s 30 years on this planet we have had some conversations on life, we’ve shot fireworks, we’ve played on the beach and I’ve enjoyed his cooking. In this episode he and I talk about his life as a farmer, a bread maker, a real estate agent, being an internet heartthrob, the son of a celebrity and the man he is today. Nikko is a man not afraid to keep reinventing himself as he grows. I really enjoyed spending this 40 or so minutes with my nephew and I believe you will too!
