Cam Richards was a teenager from Garden City, SC when he stepped onto the world surfing stage. On Dec 6, 2018 at the age of 19 he had what many call the perfect ride at Hawaii’s famous Pipeline on a board designed, shaped and made by his father Kelly Richards.
Kelly Richards is a no nonsense, straight up waterman. He tells you like it is and says he is who is and if that bothers you, well, he doesn’t care. The first time I reached out he said yes but warned me that he stuttered. Kelly wasn’t sure our listeners would tolerate his speech impediment. I assured him that was not a problem.
When I started surfing at 11 yrs old in NMB, SC there were maybe 3 true surf shops along The Grand Strand. Established in 1969, The Village Surf Shop in Garden City being one, along with a surf & bike shop in Myrtle. At that time Eric Eason and his wife owned it. Anytime we surfed the south shores of the beach we had to make a stop there for wax or a new leash. I was to young and broke for a new board. LOL
When Eric was ready to retire, Kelly, his family and business partner Brian Campbell bought the shop and dove head first into being not only a first class shop but also being very active in the community and its growth.
Kelly has always supported and encouraged both his sons, Cole and Cam, to chase their surf dreams. Cam chose to dive deep into the professional surfing world. Cole is a key figure at the shop and in the water teaching new generations how to surf.
Many kids along The Grand Strand owe their passion for surfing and the surfing lifestyle to Kelly and The Village Surf Shop. Though Cam may be the face of professional surfing for the Myrtle Beach area, his dad is the man who keeps the boards in the water and local Pipeline dreams alive.
